Watch the moon eclipse Earth in stunning video from Artemis 1's Orion spacecraft

Artemis 1's uncrewed Orion capsule captured a jaw-dropping view of the moon crossing in front of Earth on Nov. 28, 2022.

Colliding Neutron Stars can Generate Long Gamma-ray Bursts

Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRBs) are the most energetic recurring events in the Universe. Only the Big Bang was more energetic, and it was a singularity. Astronomers see GRBs in distant Universes, and a lot of research has gone into understanding them and what causes them.

NASA loses contact with ICON atmosphere-studying satellite in Earth orbit

NASA's ICON atmosphere-studying satellite, well into an extended mission in space, fell silent on Nov. 25. Troubleshooting is ongoing, but the spacecraft has not responded to calls from home.

“Early Dark Energy” Could Explain the Crisis in Cosmology

In 1916, Einstein finished his Theory of General Relativity, which describes how gravitational forces alter the curvature of spacetime. Among other things, this theory predicted that the Universe is expanding, which was confirmed by the observations of Edwin Hubble in 1929. Since then, astronomers have looked farther into space (and hence, back in time) to measure how fast the Universe is expanding – aka. the Hubble Constant. These measurements have become increasingly accurate thanks to the discovery of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) and observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope.

NASA's new moon lander contest heats up with Blue Origin, Northrop Grumman

There are at least two Human Landing Systems vying for future NASA Artemis missions on the moon, adding on to SpaceX Starship lander approved for Artemis 3 and Artemis 4.

How Artificial Intelligence Can Find the Source of Gamma-Ray Bursts

Gamma-ray bursts come in two main flavors, short and long. While astronomers believe that they understand what causes these two kinds of bursts, there is still significant overlap between them. A team of researchers have proposed a new way to classify gamma-ray bursts using the aid of machine learning algorithms. This new classification scheme will help astronomers better understand these enigmatic explosions.

Private Chinese rocket reaches orbit 2 years after test-flight failure (video)

The Kuaizhou 11 rocket, which is operated by the Chinese company Expace, has performed its first successful launch, two years after failing its first test flight.

The Geminids Will be Peaking on December 14th. They’re Usually the Most Active Meteor Shower Every Year

Meteor showers are a great way to share a love of astronomy with those who might not be as familiar with it. Almost everyone loves watching streaks of light flash across the sky, but usually, it’s so intermittent that it can be frustrating to watch. That’s not the case for the next few weeks, though, as the annual Geminid meteor shower is underway until December 24th.

Peekaboo! Strange tiny galaxy provides a glimpse into the universe's early history

A strange local dwarf galaxy was hidden from astronomers for years by the glare of a foreground star, earning the nickname 'Peekaboo.'

SpaceX now targeting Dec. 11 for launch of Japanese moon lander after delays

SpaceX is now targeting Dec. 11 for the launch of a private Japanese moon lander after a series of delays with multiple Falcon 9 rockets.

With eyes on Mars, NASA algorithm tackles dust devils on Earth

On Mars, dust devils can have both positive and negative impacts on robotic exploration on the planet.

A Star was Blocking a Galaxy, but Now it’s Moved Enough That Astronomers can Finally Examine What it Was Hiding

One of the biggest puzzles in astronomy, and one of the hardest ones to solve, concerns the formation and evolution of galaxies. What did the first ones look like? How have they grown so massive?

Gamma-ray Burst Surprise: Hybrid Merger Made Magnetar

Gamma-ray bursts are generally thought to come in two flavors — supernovae or neutron star mergers. But discoveries are blurring that line.

Bizarre long gamma-ray burst came from merging stellar corpses

Scientists have tracked a high-energy blast of radiation back to the collision of two neutron stars and the kilonova explosion that resulted from the violent merger.

MTG-I1 never to be seen again

As preparations to launch Europe’s first Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite continue, the team at Europe’s Spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, has bid farewell to their precious satellite as it was sealed from view within the Ariane 5 rocket’s fairing. This all-new weather satellite is set to take to the skies on 13 December.
