A collision between the Milky Way and neighboring galaxy Andromeda is far from a sure thing; in fact, it could hinge on the flip of a cosmic coin.
Over a decade’s worth of NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope data was used to re-examine the long-held prediction that the Milky Way galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy in about 4.5 billion years. The astronomers found that, based on the latest observational data from Hubble and Gaia, there is only a 50-50 chance of the two galaxies colliding within the next 10 billion years.
Auroras may be visible from Alaska to Massachusetts geomagnetic storm conditions continue.
The planetary nebula is located 3,000 light-years from Earth in the constellation Draco.
The first quarter moon is the perfect opportunity to explore shadowed craters lining the terminator.
A new study debates the complex ethical questions that must be considered if we're to terraform Mars and lays the blueprint for a potential path forward.
The idea that the Milky Way (MW) and Andromeda (M31) will collide emerged after decades of observations by a host of astronomers. The Hubble played a decisive role in the determination during the early 2000s. It was a triumph of precision astronomy and space telescopes. Now, the Hubble has played an equally important role in cancelling the collision.

The White House is pulling the nomination of Jared Isaacman as NASA administrator, saying that the next agency chief should be "in complete alignment" with President Trump's agenda.
The search for life on other worlds needs a way to sift through the chemistry of their atmospheres. If another species observed Earth to search for life, they'd look for "smoking gun" chemistry in the atmosphere. That includes looking for oxygen, since it is created through photosynthesis by plants and some bacteria. So, the key is to look for life-dependent chemical "signals" at exoplanets.
